Embrace the Calling: A Weekly Devotional for Mission (#1: Pentecost Sunday)

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

John 16:7 CSB

Friday night at our house is movie night. My wife makes popcorn, I build a blanket fort, and my daughters get to watch a movie. Usually, my oldest daughter picks whatever movie she is obsessed with at that time. If I even hint at MAYBE watching another movie, the tears begin to flow. Why? In her mind, nothing could be any better than the movie she already has.

I wonder if the disciples felt that way when they heard that Jesus was going away…the thought of receiving something better seemed impossible.

What could be better than God the Word in flesh beside them? The answer: God the Spirit within them.

What a privilege it is that God’s Spirit rests within us! We can embrace his calling for his Mission because his Spirit empowers us! In truth, we have something better than Jesus walking beside us. He lives in us! We can face all challenges, grow to be more like Christ, and be conduits for his Kingdom…all because his Spirit is within us!

Lord, on this day you opened the heavens and poured out your Spirit on your Church. Just as you empowered the early Church on the day of Pentecost, pour out your Spirit upon us now. May we walk in step with your Spirit, grow in the Fruits of your Spirit, and be shining witnesses to your redeeming power. We ask these things in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
